Mobs assaulting protestors (Tony CHOI, Lok Tung)
After angry mobs turn on protesters, students call off talks - SCMP
As the Occupy Central movement, aka Umbrella Revolution, comes to the seventh day, Some mobs occur in Mong Kok and assault the students protestors.
1. Transliteration
For the transliterated elements, we can see by the English name of the district like Mong Kok and Tsim Sha Tsui are transliterated from their Chinese name which are 旺角 and 尖沙咀 in Cantonese. Take Mong Kok as an example, 旺角 means the crowd corner of the city. However, it had been romanized according to the pronunciation in Cantonese.
2. Re-contextualization
About the re-contextualization appears in the article, Admiralty is the typical examples. Admiralty means 金鐘 in Chinese. The literal meaning of 金鐘 is Golden Bell, which refers to the golden bell used by the Wellington Barracks for timekeeping. This is a symbolic icon of Hong Kong before the handover. However, Admiralty refers to the Admiralty Dock that housed a naval base. The Hybrid language usage is very interesting as the meaning of both 金鐘 and Admiralty are so different, but they refer to the same place.
3. Cultural Transfer: Adaptation
As the article mentioned, mobs assaulted student protestors in Mong Kok. The word "mobs" has been adapted while in the article from BBC used the word "triad". This is a clear cultural transfer adapted by the SCMP from Chinese culture to the Foreign culture. It is because the word "triad (三合會)" mainly refers to the gangs form by Chinese. Therefore, the SCMP adapted the word "mobs (暴徒)", which erase the hidden background of that group of people. With the word "mobs", reader will only get the message that a group of people violently approach the protestors. However, without using the word "triad", less messages had delivered to the readers.
