Hong Kong protests: Did China go back on its promises? (vickii chung)

Recently, there is a demonstration in Hong Kong which get many locals supports. They fight against the decision by the senior Chinese leadership and want the right to nominate 提名. Also, some demonstrators said China go back on 違背 its promises.

This is an article from BBC News which is written in English with bilingual element.

Woman writes a sign supporting Hong Kong at a protest in Stockholm, Sweden (1 Oct 2014)

The girl in this photo was writing a slogan in English for the rally in Sweden. Most demonstrators certainly are Hongkongers. However, this girl’s targeted audience is not Hongkong demonstrators, but the international world. I guess she wants to let more western people know what Hong Kong people fighting for to raise concern of this movement

Also, the phrase ‘ONE COUNTRY, TWO SYSTEMS’ can be translated as 一國兩制Also ‘Hong Kong’ can be transliterated as 香港. This slogan also can let others know the core value of Hong Kong and why Hong Kong people want democracy as they are different from Mainland China.

Protesters hang a banner in Hong Kong

It is a banner made by a local demonstrator. As we can see, there are two languages – English and Chinese. The word in English ’DEMOCRACY’ means 民主 in Chinese. Why he wrote in English? Perhaps Hong Kong was once British colony and British let Hong Kong people to know what democracy is and make Hong Kong people have a dream of democracy.

Also, this new also included a Hong Kong democracy timeline. It mainly for those who do not know so much about Hong Kong democracy, especially those who know English. Therefore I think this article’s targeted audience is western people, not the Chinese or Hong Kong people.

Democracy is related to Hong Kong Basic Law. However the targeted audience do not know so much about Hong Kong Law system, so this article also included a website of Basic Law to those readers. http://www.basiclaw.gov.hk/en/basiclawtext/chapter_4.html
The default language of this website is English and simplified and traditional Chinese are offered. The default language can bring the targeted audience more convenient to get further information of this incident.

The main idea of this article is whether China have went back on its promise. Absolutely, this question would be banned in Mainland China. In my opinion, no matter china have went back on its promise or not, I think the right of nominate is a must to Hong Kong. As Emily Lau said, North Koreans can vote, but that doesn’t mean it is democracy.

The first president of Communist Party of China said this but the current president ran counter his aim, is it sarcastic?

  1. Interesting ! But i think it is not right to just follow one idea no matter what the circumstance is. You need to adapt to local conditions...
