Be a single? Be a shopaholic! (By Angel Yu)

Be a single? Be a shopaholic! (By Angel Yu)

'HURRAY! I have longed for the day! It's finally here! It's time to dash.' Does it narrate what you think? :D

By the way, do you know what Single's Day stands for? I guess our classmates Isabella and Justine may not come across this term before, right? Haha

Let me tell you now. Indeed, this is not the day for you to shop:P Single's Day is originated in China, which is known as '光棍節(transliteration:Guanggun Jie) ' in Chinese. It is a festival created and established by a group of University students in China.

If you just take a look at the Chinese name, you surely can't get its meaning. Even if you translate it directly, you will get the funny and meaningless name- 'bare sticks holiday'.  (Oh,what a good name!) Apparently, The English name 'Single's Day' was a re-contextualization phrase from its Chinese name. As people who do not have girlfriend or boyfriend are known as 'singles', the recontextualized name can clearly deliver the rationale of the festival. Single's Day spate a heatwave among young people in China.

Have you ever tried Youtiao (a kind of deep-fried dough sticks) before? It is one of the famous dishes in Chinese cuisine. Wait for a minute...! What the hell are you talking about? What are their relationship?

Calm down, we are not in a hurry :D Let me show you a photo of Youtiao. Is it mouth-watering?

In fact, the appearance of Youtiao symbolizes the number 1. Aren't they look similar? In the morning of 11.11, people will have four Youtiao and one egg or Baozi(steamed bun) as their breakfast. Can you figure out the reason behind? If you don't know, it doesn't matter. Just remember to do the same on 11.11 to celebrate such interesting fest.!

On the other hand, thanks to the creativity of those university students, it opens up a new market for Online Shopping Marts like Taobao(淘寶), Alibaba(阿里巴巴),eBay,etc. They provide bargain prices to their customers on that particular day. These acts aroused netizens' attention and consequently boost up the sales of the marts! You can never imagine how it casts a spell on Chinese people. If you are still looking for your favorites and considering which one is suitable for you, I am afraid that you will have your jaw dropped when you click the 'Purchase' button. It is because something will pop up...

oops!I am so sorry for that. T_T

Here is a warm reminder for all of you :) Hmm...12 days to go. Please make sure that you have chosen all the items you want before the day. Get yourself prepared as what you did on the day you registered your subjects through the intranet portal. Open as much tab as you can using Google Chrome. Right, Mr Google Chrome. Not that OLD MAN IE :P
Catch up with me after that day and share your exciting bidding experience >v< Good luck!

  3. Interesting. I didn't know that you guys have a single day. So do I also get a discount even if I am not single? On the other hand it really reminds me once again how easily companies can force us to buy stuff. Isn't it funny? Three years ago I used to live in Argentina. There they had a bound of different festivals. Indeed, for every occasion they have created a commercial purpose. So during my stay I celebrated día del hermano (brother day), día del hermana (sister day), día del amigos (friends day), día del abuela (grandma's day) and so on. And for every occasion it was tradition to buy something...
