First of all, whenever people talk about KPOP,
which song will pop out of your mind?
I guess Gangnam Style, the brainwashing song sung by PSY will probably be answer, right?
This awesome song is the most viewed video in youtube and it has more than 2billion viewers.
What a incredible click rate!!!
每當提到韓國流行音樂,你會想起那一首歌呢?
會不會是鳥叔的那首江南Style呢?
你知道嗎?這首歌的音樂錄像在YouTube上是擁有最多的點擊率影片喔!
係呢個韓風襲港既年代,每當我地講起kpop,你會諗起邊首歌呢?
我估十個有八個都會揀psy既江南style,係咪?
呢首勁洗腦既歌,如今依然都係YouTube最多人睇過既片... (唔好話比我知你無睇過wo...)

Here's a Youtube clip of Gangnam Style
which English, Romania, Traditional Chinese and Korean lyrics are shown.
以下這條江南Style片子集合英文,羅馬文,繁體中文以及韓文歌詞於一身
下邊呢條片有齊雞腸,羅馬文,正體字同埋泡菜文,一次滿足你四個願望。

As the song gets more prevalent under the boom of KPOP,
netizen is willing translate the lyrics into different languages other than Korean to let more people know this song.
Besides, did you notice some elements that most Korean songs got in this song?
由於韓流文化的風行,為了讓更多人認識歌詞大意,不少網民會主動將韓文歌詞翻譯成各種語言。考考你,你知道有有什麼元素在韓國的音樂裡是很常見的呢?
係韓風吹襲得如此厲害既年頭,好多人都會將d泡菜文轉做其他人睇得明既語言。
問你一條問題,你有無發覺d kpop 其實有好多好似既地方?
....
AN ENGLISH SONG NAME
AN ENGLISH CHORUS
AND most importantly, AN ENGLISH STAGE NAME.
英語歌名/英語副歌/還有英語藝名
英文歌名/英文chorus/同埋d組合artist都係用英文名;p
....
Nowadays, artists in Korean tend to use English rather than a Korean one.
Here we've got PSY as an example and there are some others famous Korean groups like BigBang, Girls' Generation, EXO and AKMU also have their name in English.
By using English name, people all around the world can easily understand and memorize as English is a lingua franca in many parts of the world.
What's more, the reason for having an English song name, the same principle applies!
現在的韓國歌手或組合都有以英文作為名字。
剛提到的鳥叔就是一個明顯的例子,其他例子還有 BigBang, Girls' Generation, EXO 和 AKMU
由於英文是國際通用語,因此以英文作藝名可以讓世界各地的人更容易認識以及記住他們的名字。
依家好多韓國歌手同組合都會用英文做藝名。
岩岩講到既psy就係一個例子,而BigBang, Girls' Generation, EXO 和 AKMU都係常見用英文做名既組合。
....
And again, take Gangnam Style as an example,
the chorus:
以江南Style的副歌作例子:
以Gangnam Style既副歌為例:
Op, op, op, op
Oppa Gangnam Style
Gangnam Style
....
continues using simple English word (style) code-mixed with Korean word (Gangnam강남구).
Undoubtedly, the reason behind is that
副歌中的style為英語,而Gangnam則是韓語강남구的譯音。
詞人將兩種語言混在一起的原因是:
chorus入面既style係英文,而Gangnam就係韓文강남구既譯音。
而點解填詞個位要咁做呢?原因好簡單:
“casting a song’s chorus in a different language may draw on
a language that has ‘value in the global marketplace(Heller 2000: 12)”.
....
There's one more intriguing thing I found...
我還找到一個有趣的片子...
開心大發現!
To let more people know how to sing the song,
some youtubers will use Soramimi which means interpreting lyrics in one language as similar-sounding lyrics in another language.
為了讓更多人學會唱這首歌,有些用戶會替這首歌寫上空耳歌詞,而空耳就是於將一種語言的影片、音樂作品,以另一種語言的諧音重寫內容,以達到比如惡搞或一語雙關的目的。
為左令跟多人投入泡菜文化既懷抱中,有d人會整d空耳歌詞出黎。以今次條片為例,空耳就係將d泡菜文轉做普通話發音。
Isn't it funny?
很有趣吧?
蘇funny:d

Well, if you get bored with uncle PSY.
It doesn't matter~
I'm going to introduce some other instances of bilingualism under Korean Wave.
假如你覺得鳥叔已經不是你的菜,沒關係,我還有很多相關的例子:)
如果你覺得講韓版錢國偉好無癮既,fine,我仲有貨!

Do you like Korean make-up?
Have you watched the video of Pony on Youtube?
Or you've already subscribed the channel?
你喜歡韓國女孩的化妝嗎?
你看過Pony歐尼的片子嗎?
你鍾唔鍾意韓妹既化妝?
你有無睇過Pony既化妝片?定已經一早subscribe左?
Pony is a well-known Korean make-up guru who has had many beauty books published.
In her videos, she always speaks in Korean with English subtitles provided and if you click the Subtitles/CC button, correct Korean subtitles will be shown and you may also choose other languages which are translated by the Google translation machine automatically.
Although she is Korea-based, she still tend to use English in the subtitles.
I'm sure you can guess her motive after reading what I've mentioned above, right? Haha
Pony
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you are not really interested in songs and make-up, it's okay.
Korean wave doesn't simply has great influences on these aspects.
Korea is renowned in TV dramas as well!
如果你對歌曲和化妝沒興趣的話,真的真的沒關係...
因為還有韓流文化中最具代表性的韓劇!
拿拿拿,如果你唔鍾意kpop,唔鍾意化妝,真心無所謂!
因為韓流百足咁多爪,以下落黎將會講既韓劇作為韓國既王牌,無得輸啦掛?!
....
And... the most frequent heard words or phrases from the Korean drama must be
"OPPA"(오빠) AND "SIMIDA"(습니다)#
In mainland China, many teenagers, especially girls, they like calling their Korean idols as 歐巴(oppa), and using 思密達(simida) to end their sentences in the Internet.
They just transliterated the words and apply them directly in their own language.
在中國內地,很多8090後,特別是熱愛韓國文化的妹紙,他們大多會稱他們的偶像為歐巴,而且會在微博或微信朋友圈等網絡上的每個句子最後加上思密達,以表示自己是“萌萌哒”!
其實係大陸,好多後生仔女,尤其是女仔都會叫佢地既偶像做oppa,
上親網打句野都要加思密達作結。
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

再見
拜拜

#simida(습니다): It does not has a actual meaning.
Korean use this word to end their sentence politely.

That's a lively post, thank you Cherry. I'd be curious to read your Chinese version later!
ReplyDeleteYour post is very interesting! I can see your effort on the design of the typesetting and the lively translations of three languages. Also, your videos and pictures attract me. And I also think that the bilingualism of K-pop is one of the main reason that it can create a trend all around the world.
ReplyDeleteGenesis;)
You choose a very good example - "oppa gangnam style". It really popular that everyone know it and people can understand the bilingual elements more easily!! And you not only talk about the korean song, you also talk about the language such as "OPPA". It is great that you can introduce the Korean culture interestingly and in different ways.
ReplyDeleteIt is great that you introduce the Korean culture. I think it is a great example that have many bilingual elements.

Although I am not very familiar with Korean culture, your blog post definitely aroused my interest in knowing more about that. I like the way you write as it matches the so-called 'Hong Kong Style'. I enjoy it so much!
