Linguistic Borrowing by rex
Borrowing words are from foreign origin. As the rapid globalization process, English, as an international common language used in many nations, is rapidly developing. Therefore, English has kept adopting words from different language. Here are some examples.
Gangnam style, adopted from Korean, is an extended version of “hippie”, which means people with upscale and lavish lifestyle. It became commonly understood after the K-pop song “Gangnam style” rocked the entire pop-music world. Kawaii means cute in Japanese, and is frequently used in Hong Kong for dozen of years. And finally, it came into English. Emoji is the tiny picture that can be used to show emotion in texting messages. It is direct borrowing from Japanese word “えもじ” (which pronounces as e-moji). “え” (e) means pictures. “もじ” (moji) means letters. It could be considered as the most popular borrowing word in recent years, as it is easily found in any conversation apps on devices.
