HAPPY HALLOWEEEEEN!! (vickiichung)

Did you guys enjoy playing the ghost house trips organized by the hostels? Although 2014 Halloween is past, we can explore bilingualism in Halloween!

If you are dare (of course I am not), you may look forward to the ghost house trip 哈囉喂 of Ocean Park. In order to provide all visitors from the world fun, Ocean Park have offered a bilingual website for Halloween.

The title of the Chinese version is 史上最強陣容 驚喜雙倍上演. The slogan of English version is ‘double the fun double the fear, it’s our biggest Halloween event yet!’ It is easy for us to recognize that there is a direct translation between both version and their meanings are almost same. However, the English one is much longer as the Chinese phrase驚喜 can respect fear and fun as a word. Also, the name 哈囉喂 is an transliteration of Halloween.

Let go into the context.

The meaning of description of both version is almost same as you can see the reference below. However, I found somethings interesting.

Ocean Park's Halloween Fest 2014 takes guests through a surprising film world

部份鬼屋更會日夜大變身,轉出「日間開心」、「夜晚驚心」兩種完全不同體驗

The Chinese version adds some local languages, such as鬼界,玩盡,鬼門關, which is unique in Hong kong and mainland china. The foreign visitors may not understand what they mean .Therefore, we can find localisation here. HongKongese can find the echo here and enjoy more into the trip.

But to cater for those international visitors, Ocean Park have a direct translation for them. I think the foreign vistors can create an image in their mind to guess what those meals look like.
 In the catering part:

「回魂堂」 Hall of Returning Spirits
「腥棺發材燒雞乳酪鮮果沙律」、Roasted Chicken Salad with Fruits and Yogurt in a coffin
「鬼畫符意式焗芝士牛肉醬闊麵」 Beef Lasagne with Cheese talismans
「心慌慌夜光」系列 Twinkle-in-the-dark collections

What’s more, the performance list of Chinese version also includes code-switching.

地獄魔星使出Chok爆姿勢大跳MK PopHip Hop舞,配上死光閃現的地獄烈火戰車,
一場速度與膽量的黑暗比拼即將爆發!

If you have watched TVB before, you will know what the word ’chok’ means and where it comes from. However, it is no idea for the foreign visitors to get what ‘chok’ means. It may be a ‘we-code’ of HongKongers. MK-POP is also poplar in Hong Kong this year. MK stands for Mong kok and people stereotype it as something they laugh for(?) and is silly.

As you know Halloween is a western festival and there is a Chinese festival called 孟蘭盆節.Although both festivals are regarding ghosts, in fact, 孟蘭盆節 is more serious and not for entertaining. The Chinese have serious ceremony for it. Due to globalization, Halloween is appeared and know among Asia and people start to celebrate it, so we can play 哈囉喂 to have fun. and nowadays, Halloween in Hong Kong is a culture mixture with the western celebrating ways and local languages,

finally .. here is a late happy Halloween!
