Defending Democracy
Because Why Wouldn't I?
Last Monday I decided to embrace American stereotypes and get involved in a political issue that doesn't directly affect me. The Student Strike took place at the Chinese University in Hong Kong. Over 13,000 student came out to protest Mainland China's suppression of their right to vote and choose their government leaders. Although all the student speakers spoke in Cantonese, I found the whole thing very inspiring. While everyone at the rally was relatively young, they cared about their future, and had very realistic and intelligent opinions on the topic. My friend Lily and I spoke with many local students who were extremely curious to why we were there, and to learn about our thoughts on universal suffrage, the boycott, and why we cared. Some of them even shook our hands and thanked us for supporting them. Although I was hesitant to attend at first, I am glad I came out to help support Hong Kong in their fight for Democracy, a freedom I sometimes take for granted.
"Take a Stance, Disobey"
Happy to see you get involved, Justine.
